Yangtze River Art Museum

Changjiang Art Museum is located in Changjiang Village in the northeast corner of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. In 2016, Changjiang Village, like tens of millions of other villages in China, was wiped out for urban construction reasons. The land that carries the memories of people's daily life has undergone fractured changes. As a cultural space shared by the public, the art gallery will respond to and commemorate the stories that have happened on this land in a contemporary way.

The gallery is located at the southern boundary of the newly built community, close to the city. Therefore, how buildings connect communities and cities is one of our concerns. The main staircase on the southwest side of the art gallery climbs up from the city street and leads to the outdoor activity platform on the second floor. The platform becomes an erected square, and then extends to the community through the bridge on the north side. This external public flow line is completely independent of the exhibition flow line in the museum, and both serve the urban public and community residents together.

Inside the art gallery, a "light tower" with a bottom diameter of 5.7 meters and a height of 16.4 meters is the "anchor point" of the overall spatial organization. The "Light Tower" is both the starting point and the end point. People's experience of this space starts from the ground floor, there will be two opposites in the visiting path, and it ends with the spiral staircase that surrounds the outer layer of the "light tower". In the exhibition space, natural light is softly filtered by skylights, and then penetrates into the exhibition hall through the 1.9-meter square and 1.9-meter-deep lattice beam, forming a homogeneous and shrouded light. The external stairs connecting the second and fourth floors, the corner windows of the inner courtyard, and the vertical slits in the southwest corner of the fourth floor exhibition hall provide people immersed in the exhibition with a moment of looking back at the city.

In our view, the Yangtze River Art Museum is like a hard brick, silent and watching the hustle and changing city around it at this specific coordinate point of space and time.
